Mount Lassen last erupted 100 years ago...
We stayed at Manzanita Lake, one of only a couple campgrounds open so far this year in the park. If you look close here Kai is giving Ruby a hug :)
Manzanita Lake was the perfect home base for our daily explorations. Here it the view from a trail about halfway around the lake. The campground is straight ahead in those trees.
A few pics from around camp....
George, Fromie & pretty much the cast of Cars joined us for the trip! :)
As we all know it is a very low snow year and Kai was a bit let down when we could not find snow in Yosemite a couple months ago... well about 8,000 feet up, we found snow!! :)
The lake below Lassen peak was slowly starting to melt.
Quick pit stop to eat some snow! (Kai's request)
"Say SNOW!!"
Wooo Hoo! Upside down below the peak of Mount Lassen! +/- 8,500 feet high!
The dogs even loved the snow!
Here's Ruby rolling around in it :)
After playing in the snow we drove down to see the "hot lava" that was coming out of the volcano...
Before we got to the lava we found this awesome GIANT rock! Here is Kai holding it up :)
Here I am giving Kai a hand :) (I love Kai's face in this one, he is really giving it the extra effort!)
A rare self timer family pic!! :)
We found the LAVA! Kai was really really into this. It was amazing.
The next day we went cave exploring and also to find a waterfall our friends had recommended to us...
First we visited Subway Cave, an ancient lava tube about 1/3 of a mile long and at its highest point about 15' high. Here Kai & Jenna are entering the cave...
We were the only ones there, it was about 45 degrees inside and there was no light, so we all brought our flashlights!
Kai was super brave and led us over the extremely bumpy lava bottom telling us not to worry, there were no monsters in here :)
We found the exit to the cave! That was fun! Next stop...
Burney Falls!!
Hawaii has nothing on these falls! Incredible.
Walking down the trail to the falls...
If you look close I walked down to the pools edge to give some scale to how huge and awesome these falls are!
Family Pic :)
Jenna & I :)
The hike back up... and up, and up :)
Next stop was a swim at Lake Britton which is in the same campground as Burney Falls, yes we are coming back here!!
Kai saw something he needed to see close up :)
Running on the shore of this sleepy beautiful lake
And of course... on the way home this afternoon. I call this one "Can I help you?" haha Curious George on the ipad to get through the 4 hour drive back to Petaluma :)
